Old Concept for the Series

This particular series chronicles the downfall of the Tumblety siblings, the three Yukara-Kyndra hybrids who inspired Ares to kidnap Rowan. Two groups of characters--one of protagonists, one of antagonists--are the main characters. The protagonists are a group of seniors at Queen Academy, friends of Kim Queen herself. They are Ashley Goode (the Queen Bee of the group), Abigail Cullman (the sporty one), Natalie Carson (the slutty one), Tangerina Harwood (the shy one), and Lucille Goode (Ashley's twin and fringe member of the clique).

The series is a trilogy with each book narrating the downfall of one of the hybrids: first Jane, then Elizabeth, and finally Jack. Jane and Elizabeth are currently slated to die in their respective installments; Jack's fate remains unclear. It will occur after or during Rowan's pregnancy.

Tentative titles include Like the Diamond Bright for the first installment, A Subtle Web for the second, and Up a Winding Stair for the third.

The Tumblety Siblings as Serial Killers

Elizabeth Tumblety
- named after Elizabeth Bathory and Francis Tumblety
- a mission-oriented killer
- MO: Unlike her sister, Elizabeth seeks to rid the world of humanity for a sane reason, or so to speak: she simply believes that the fiends should not be warring amongst themselves, and should instead work towards eradicating their "true" enemy, humanity.

Jane Tumblety
- named after Jane Toppan and Francis Tumblety
- a visionary killer
- MO: Jane is the entire reason that the siblings each became murderers; their parents (an interspecies couple) were advocates for ending the war between species, but Jane suffered a psychotic break at a very young age and killed them. Now, only Elizabeth can calm her.

Jack Tumblety
- named after Jack the Ripper and his possible true identity, Francis Tumblety
- a thrill killer
- MO: As Jack harbors a deep hatred for his eldest sister, his victims are usually woman with a physical likeness to his sisters; with the exception of Ashley, his murders and attempts are never sexual. His sisters have yet to make the connection between his victims and their likeness.

More Recent Concept for the Trilogy

This particular series will be a trilogy focusing on Steel's clan of Yukara and Ares' clan of Kyndra. The main character of the series is a young Yukara named Rowan. The first installment focuses on Steel and Rowan's relationship (in which he does not return her romantic feelings), the second installment focuses on Ares' abduction of Rowan and Steel's attempts at rescue, and the third focuses on Rowan's pregnancy and hybrid child (son?).

Core characters throughout the series are Steel, Rowan, and Ares; major supporting characters are Artemis and Johanna in the first installment, Belladonna in the second installment, and the Tumblety siblings (particularly Jack) and Rowan's child in the final installment.

Note re: The Last of the Janulis

I got back out my character pictures for "The Last of the Janulis" today and had a brainstorm regarding how to use them. I had planned to have the Janulis story occur in Madara, but that makes little sense now that most of the fiend species migrated to other universes/series. So why not migrate the Janulis story, too? And what better place could there be than the Hybrid Theory universe? With the Yukara and Kyndra having been reimagined therein as fey species, it makes perfect sense for the Janulis to receive the same treatment. Felidae Fey, I think they would be called?

New Concept for the Series

Canidae fey reach adulthood at around twenty. At that age, females of the species will experience their first estrus, which will last about a week. The Canidae estrus is a once-per-year fertile period (though they can have nonreproductive sex throughout the year) during which the female is compelled to reproduce; in the weeks leading up to the estrus, she will begin releasing pheromones that attract male Canidae to her and instigate their rut (during which they are similarly compelled to mate with her--but also to attempt to drive off other males).

In A Subtle Web, Rowan is swiftly approaching her twentieth birthday. She is one of the few remaining female Canidae, raised under the protection of one of the few remaining males, Steel. She waits in anticipation of her estrus, as she is sure that Steel will finally claim her as soon as she reaches fertility. He, however, has no such intentions, so when he notices the signs of her pre-estrus, he takes preventative measures. By the time the estrus hits, Steel has arranged for Rowan to stay locked and alone in a safehouse for the entire week of her fertility, and once it's over, she's extraordinarily hurt and confused by his rejection. He goes on to explain that he's not interested in her as anything but a surrogate daughter, and if she wants a mate, he can try to help her contact other Canidae males. She's thoroughly crushed.

Meanwhile, a Aranae fey named Ares meets with a half-Canidae, half-Aranae hybrid named Jack. Aranae females are extremely reclusive and dangerous; they do not form partnerships and only tolerate the presence of males while trying to conceive (and even then, the encounters often end with the male being devoured). As such, Aranae males tend to avoid females, females tend to mate with unsuspecting human men (human/fey pairs produce children who are by all accounts purely fey), and males tend to avoid siring children. Ares, however, is intrigued by the option that Jack represents; Jack was born to a Aranae male and a Canidae female, and Ares ponders the possibility of hybrids. (This has the interesting effect of making Jack's sisters relevant again, if only to prove to Ares that half-Aranae females are less inclined to kill their fathers/brothers/mates than pure ones are, perhaps because Canidae form strong familial bonds.)

Once Ares is convinced of his plan (after establishing that hybrids aren't infertile or otherwise deficient or impractical), he sets his sights on securing a Canidae female. And the only one he discovers (besides Jack's mother) is Rowan.
