The man had been persistent, that was for sure. Sparrow was, of course, under no delusions that it had anything to do with her; Galen Freed's interest began and ended with her husband, and she knew she was little more than an afterthought to him. At absolute best, she was a bonus prize to cash in on if he ever found success; at worst, he thought her an obstacle just as Loretta had.

That latter, though, she had become fairly convinced was not the case. At the very least, he'd been trying to convince her of such for the past few weeks now; no doubt Loretta had assured him that his chances of getting what he wanted depended upon not Frost's opinion of him but hers. Frost was easy; he would have sex with damn near anyone, provided they were at the very least a few steps above hideous. For the past few years, at least, the bulk of his decision seemed to revolve around whether or not Sparrow was interested in the person in question.

She hadn't done much with that over the past few years; though she was well aware of the freedoms it offered her, they hadn't been freedoms she'd particularly wanted until now. Until last fall, after all, her life had seemed to be approaching something that looked like completeness; even without her getting over whatever qualms she might have had about the kinds of relationships Frost had clearly been trying to push her into all along, her love for Simon and Nadia had allowed her to indulge, even if it meant giving Frost what he wanted long before she was willing to do any such thing for him.

But then Simon had died and Nadia had withdrawn, and then she'd been facing not just Galen's unsubtle attentions but the uncomfortable presence of Kieran Bell.

Regardless of what she thought of the man in retrospect, she had to be grateful for what he'd done for her, loathe as she was to admit it. While the man was a pale imitation of Simon that had been more along the lines of salt in her wounds than a comfort, he had at least helped her get over the loss in some capacity; Kieran Bell had been the first person Sparrow had pursued herself, independent of Frost's own instigation, and even if it hadn't worked out as she'd hoped, there was something so undeniably empowering about it that she couldn't pretend she wasn't better off than she was before.

Had Simon lived, she would've gladly lived the rest of her life with him and Frost and Nadia, but in a world without him, Kieran had helped her realize a lesson she should've learned years ago--one she likely would've learned years ago if she hadn't known it was one Frost himself so desperately wanted to teach her.

So, in a weird way, Galen owed what was happening now to Kieran, and not in the way he intended. Their antics earlier this year had been vaguely amusing, surely, but certainly not the thing that had helped him get what he wanted--but Kieran had helped him nonetheless. They would all just have to hope this worked out better than it had for him.

For his part, Galen seemed more surprised by his admittedly unexpected stroke of luck than she'd imagined he would. Earlier, before they'd left the Threatre behind them in favor of the privacy of the suite upstairs, it had seemed like every set of eyes in the place had been on the three of them, watching with perhaps a hint of disbelief as Galen at least appeared to finally be getting exactly what he'd wanted all along.

Sparrow had approached him first, and he'd offered her that same overconfident charm he'd been giving her all along. It wasn't, however, the shallow attention he'd been affording her during those first few weeks; instead, ever since Loretta had claimed to have "set him straight", he at least seemed to be genuinely trying to sway her. He had at least been treating her as less of a complication and more of a person recently, and while his efforts to endear himself to her had still be a far cry from what the way he'd been acting whenever Frost was around, she had to appreciate the change nonetheless. She certainly wouldn't have been doing any of this if not for that.
