Nessa is the eldest surviving child of King Melek of Ardena, the first of his offspring to pass their Ordeal. She is also the unaware bond of an archdaemon... and she's about to learn the truth.
After her Ordeal, she discusses the process with a friend or suitor, and he or she describes a feeling of overwhelming loneliness at being temporarily parted from his or her daemon; Nessa denies feeling any such thing during hers. Immediately before the Reckoning, however, she is thrown into a panic by a crushing sense of sudden solitude.
