"Jonathan Grace, you will not tell me what to do." The young Empress's voice was harsh as she glared at her older brother from across the table.
He sighed, rubbing his forehead. "Val, I'm not telling you what to do. I'm giving you advice. I'm your advisor, it's my job."
"That's the worst advice I've ever heard."
"What's so terrible about it? What's so terrible about the idea of trying to establish peace?"
"We have peace already, and it hasn't required me to go to Hilina. Why should I put myself in danger? This is the job for an ambassador."
Jonathan looked up at his sister and laughed. "You call this peace? With all due respect, this isn't peace. This is a stalemate, and another war could break out at any time. I'm simply saying that I think you should try use this opportunity to reach out to our neighbors. Would you rather try to prevent a war, or try to manage one?"
"And if I get assassinated?"
"You won't be assassinated."
"You can't be sure. I can't put myself in that kind of danger without risking the future of the empire. I can't risk my life without having an heir!"
Jonathan reached across the table for his sister's hand. "Valeria, you are the most protected woman in the world. You will not die. Even if you did, your empire is still perfectly safe. I've governed in your stead before, and I can do it again."
Valeria smiled at him. "You intend to be empress?"
"Not at all, dear."
"Then you intend to redesign our government?"
"If need be."
Valeria squeezed her brother's hand. "You're too brave, Jon. That's going to get us in trouble, you know."
He smiled. "I know."
