Note 3/8/16
Three plotlines:
* Mundane (political)
* Legendary Magic (worldwide threat)
* Conspiracy (magic & political)
I've had a neglected idea sitting around for a trope/character/scheme pileup, so maybe I can use that here? You know, the Jafar working against the Taman working against the X and the Y and the Z?
Barrier maiden gets killed at the end of the first book (by a cult?), so everyone knows the apocalypse is coming? Barrier maiden comes from a long line of ostensibly virgin priestesses and their supposed gift-from-the-Goddess virgin births? Except it turns out that its a fucking scam and the high priests are all in on it? Priests are specifically chosen based on whether or not they'll go along with the deception? (Leaving room for an aged male character who was genuinely devoted to the false truth they'd taught him and began to suspect the priests were corrupt because they kept promoting these pervy, Frollo-type bastards. Also, there's more than a bit of room for a few Frollo-type bastards and the various jealousies between them.)
Otherworldly threat is chthonic Dagon-y sea people/monsters??? Something vaguely House of Leaves-y to go along with that (in the sense of alien geometries)? Apocalypse alluded to as a great storm, followed by flooding? Diluvian?
If it takes inspiration from IRL flood myths, the "ark" could be the House of Leaves-y place?
How about subverting the usual king tropes (good king, evil king, incompetent king), how about an over-religious king? He ends up in the barrier maiden plot and gets killed for it? Or something?
