Mahariel doesn't care. Mahariel wants to hang out with Merrill. Anders wants to hang out with Mahariel--so he starts pretending he likes Merrill to get on Mahariel's good side. (Whether this evolves into him actually liking Merrill is up to you.)
(No preference for Mahariel's gender, or for pairings--Anders/Mahariel, Mahariel/Merrill, Anders/Merrill, Anders/Mahariel/Merrill, gen... anything would work. This seems like it would work best if Mahariel didn't romance anyone, and Hawke romanced Fenris, Isabela, or no one, but if anon thinks otherwise, go ahead!)
