I have a secret love for this-kink? trope? plot device? idk what to call it - where a monster turns out to be not so monstrous after all, and the hero falls for them. Earlier today I finished Here Lies The Abyss, and I thought... what if Nightmare didn't kill the person you leave in the Fade.
Instead of killing Hawke/the Warden, Nightmare leaves them to relive their worst nightmares over and over, and to eventually die from thirst/starvation/heart attack/etc. But the person turns out to be very resistant and resourceful, they find food & water, make themselves a little camp, fight off any minor demons that wander too close and other than being stuck in the Fade forever, they seem quite fine. So Nightmare starts talking to them again, they talk back, and eventually, kinda sorta romance happens. Or the closest equivalent to romance that a demon is capable of, a lot of possessiveness and lack of urge to hurt his partner?
+ not crack ++ Nightmare has some less gross form that he uses to chill when no one is actively invading his realm ++ somehow incorporate this bit of trivia I found on DA wiki: According to Cole and The Spirit of Faith, this demon originally started off with the desire to help: taking fear away so people could move on. However, over time its desire to consume fear and power twisted it into what it became. Maybe Nightmare becoming less demon-y and more spirit-y? +++ creepy demon courting +++++++++ the Inquisitor finds a way to come back and rescue the person they left in the Fade, but the person is reluctant to leave
Squicks: bathroom stuff, gore, major character death, really extreme monster/tentacle sex? like some tentacles are fiiiine, but things like... eggs, mind-controlling slime, body modifications etc are not really my cup of tea. But as long as they're clearly marked and skippable, I've nothing against including this in the story :)
Order of preference for the person left in the Fade: Alistair, m!Hawke, f!Hawke, Loghain, other wardens (Bethany, Carver, Anders etc), Stroud
Nightmare/Warden, stockholm syndrome
