The following idea is something I've seen at least a few times, but, frankly, all of them sucked in execution.
So, here's the concept: after Angelus is released in "Awakening", he finally shows everyone why he used to be called "The Scourge of Europe". With the heroes' plot armor stripped away, he blows through Angel Investigations like a hurricane. His sole mission is to destroy everything his soul has built, starting with Angel's L.A. loved ones before heading back to Sunnydale.
Connor, Buffy, and Cordelia* (in that order) should get the worst of it, as they're the ones he actually loves beyond friendship.
*I'm excising the Jasmine arc, as it's fucking stupid. When Cordelia gets her memories back at the end of Spin the Bottle, she's her; there are no possession shenanigans and none of that gross Oedipal shit with Connor. Cordy's just Cordy. The arc involving the First should remain intact, though, I suppose.
So let's see who we have. I fully expect him to kill Lilah first, but after that, there's still Cordelia, Wesley, Fred, Gunn, Connor, and Faith in Los Angeles, and Buffy, Willow, Xander, Anya, Dawn, Giles, Spike, Andrew, Robin, and the various potentials in Sunnydale.
I expect Connor will be brutally killed. I imagine Angelus killing Gunn and turning Wesley as a way to fuck with Fred. He'll probably try to kill Buffy and Faith rather than having Slaypires hanging around. I doubt he'd dare turn Giles, and he won't give a single shit about Andrew or the potentials, so they're probably going to be slaughtered. He might turn Dawn, but I doubt he'll bother turning Anya. He might be interested in Robin, though. As for Willow and Xander, I don't know... he kinda hates Xander, so I doubt he'd turn him, and keeping Willow alive would probably be dangerous. And that still begs the question of what to do with Cordelia and Fred; kill them or keep them? Not to mention the shit he'll likely do to Spike, who at this point has a soul but no chip. It's not likely to be pretty.
So, rough draft:
Lilah = killed Connor = brutally killed Cordelia = taken captive Gunn = killed (by Wes?) to torture Fred Wesley = turned to torture Fred Fred = turned by Wesley?
...on to Sunnydale...
Potentials = slaughtered Anya = slaughtered with the potentials Andrew = slaughtered w/ the potentials Dawn = turned during the slaughter Giles = killed by Wes and Dawn?
Now... here's the thing. This idea is naturally quite similar to Whirlwind, so I need to do what I can to differentiate the two (though I'm not going to assume this concept is an actual plan yet). For one thing, Buffy is turned in Whirlwind, and Spike is Angelus's mostly loyal grandchilde; in this continuity, I think I'd prefer to see the two of them stay as heroic as possible.
So here's what I'm thinking: part one takes place in L.A. Angelus gets out and kills Lila before escaping the hotel. Cordelia goes to warn Connor, but Angelus kills them both. He returns to the hotel and turns Wesley, who kills Gunn and turns Fred.
Part two shifts the plot to Sunnydale. Angelus stakes out Buffy's house, only to find the potentials there instead with Dawn, Andrew, and Anya; he kills the potentials, Andrew, and Anya, but he turns Dawn.
[working] He'll probably try to kill Buffy and Faith rather than having Slaypires hanging around. I doubt he'd dare turn Giles. He might be interested in Robin, though.
