Howl [1/?]
But here he was, lost in the middle of some unnavigable forest in the Rift without even the slightest notion of where exactly he was or where in Nirn his prey had gone. No wonder the Silver Hand hadn't wanted him; he was a Talos-damned fiasco. Yet no matter how bad he was at tracking it, however, there definitely was a werewolf here. It was somewhere nearby, somewhere close enough that Vidkun was likely to cross its path sooner or later--assuming it didn't cross his path first.
That was a genuine danger. Vidkun was stalking this thing, tracking it down in hopes of eventually capturing the beast--and the Nine knew that would've been easier with the help of the Silver Hand, but perhaps it was best for his purposes that he was alone--but now that he has lost its trail, there was no guarantee that it wasn't doing the same to him. He couldn't be sure the thing wasn't stalking him beneath the cover of the dark forest even as Vidkun wandered aimlessly, hoping to pick up its trail.
By now, though, hours had gone by without either discovering it or being set upon by it, and the sun would rising in just another few. Vidkun would need to find a place to camp for the day, some cave or perhaps a fallen tree that he could use to block out enough of the sun that his tent wouldn't be flooded with light while he was trying to sleep. He would need his rest for tomorrow night's hunt if today's bore no fruit.
And it was just around the time that Vidkun was beginning to resolve himself to another failure--the sixth this week--that he heard the howl.
It was an ear-splitting thing, though far off, and it echoed through the aspen trees of the forest for a few moments before it faded in the night air. Vidkun took off in the direction from which it had come, racing as quietly as possible through the twiggy, leafy underbrush. That, at least, was one of the few things Vidkun could do; he moved with the speed and the subtlety of a stalking sabrecat, even if he didn't exactly have the actual tracking skills of one.
He knew he was getting close when he heard the growl: a low, dangerous, unmistakeably aggressive and animalistic noise that would have sent a lesser man--a less determined man--running. Vidkun drew his bow but didn't yet reach for an arrow; he would need silver to incapacitate this thing, and silver would be seen far too easily in the moonlight. He couldn't risk giving himself away; not when he was this close.
Vidkun kept creeping forward, hoping to catch a glimpse of the beast. Off to the right, he heard another low growl, much louder and closer now; he was closing in on it, and while the aggressive noises kept coming, he didn't think it had caught sight of him yet. It could probably smell him, though, and hear his footsteps; Vidkun wondered how close he would have to be before this thing would be able to hear even the heart beating in his chest. Werewolves were amazing creatures, really. Deadly, awe-inspiring, and beautiful.
To his surprise, Vidkun could actually hear the beast's breathing as he drew near, a loud, labored panting that spoke perhaps of some kind of sickness--but Vidkun was fairly sure the beasts couldn't take ill, so he rather doubted that could be the case. Surely by now he was close enough for it to hear him, though, and yet it still hadn't run. Perhaps something was wrong with it after all.
When the massive, shadowed body of the creature came into view, Vidkun felt himself go still, a kind of panicked paralysis that left his body frozen while his mind whirled. He needed to bring this thing down, not to kill it but to incapacitate it. He didn't want the thing dead; he just had to make sure it wouldn't be able to fight back.
Howl [2/?]
The ear-splitting howl of pain the creature gave as the arrowhead sank into its thickly furred thigh was like music to Vidkun's ears, but the way the creature whirled on him was more worrisome. He knew it was going to take a few seconds before the poison coated onto the arrow took effect, but until then, the creature would have at least a few seconds to enact its furious vengeance.
All at once, the thing was on all fours, barreling toward him with no regard to the wound in its leg, and Vidkun was charging in the opposite direction as soon as he saw it moving toward him, his heart pounding in his chest as he hoped to outrun the beast.
Werewolves, Vidkun knew, could more or less keep up with horses, and he certainly didn't have one of those handy--not out here in the middle of this dense, dark forest. He ran like his life depended on it, solely because it did, and he only came to a stop when he heard the beast collapse in the underbrush, the paralysis finally taking hold.
Now that it was down, Vidkun knew, he would have to restrain the thing before it could get back up and resuming its chase, a deadly game of tag that Vidkun was more than aware he wasn't going to survive. He raced to the creature's side, wary at first that the paralysis might not be complete, that it might at any moment rear up at the waist and take a swipe at him with a still-mobile leg or snap at him with those crushing jaws... but the thing didn't move, and Vidkun grinned in his triumph as he raced to pull the silver chains from his pack and snap them into place on the creature's body.
With its ankles, wrists, and neck encased in the silver, Vidkun's eyes surveyed the clearly as quickly as they could, searching for where he could anchor the silver chains into place. He dragged the werewolf through the underbrush like a dog on a leash until he found the proper place for it, and he scurried up the more accessible of the two trees. The two shorter chains, their cuffs closed around the monster's ankles, were secured around the base of two different trees that were growing in close proximity to one another, and the third chain, the one holding the handcuffs that had been clamped around the creature's wrists, was pulled up above its head and anchored firmly to a branch near Vidkun's head.
It was only paralysis had wore off completely and the creature began to fight against its restraints that Vidkun was satisfied they were enough, and he jumped down from the tree branch he was on with a wide grin on his face.
The massive wolf's head snarled at him, canine lips drawing back over deadly, yellowed teeth, and Vidkun just kept grinning at it. Unless it broke through either those chains or the tree itself--both of which were unlikely unless he had wildly misjudged their strength--this creature wasn't getting loose. He finally had his prize.
Vidkun's gaze wandered over it, taking in the well-muscled, if distinctly inhuman, body. It was an odd, the werewolf; it stood on its hind legs like a man, but it had the head of a wolf. Its body, meanwhile, was somewhere between the two, too humanoid to be a wolf and yet too wolflike to be a man. Vidkun wondered what this particular werewolf was like in his human form--assuming, of course, that it was a him.
And at that, Vidkun could no longer put off his desires. Still smiling to himself, he finally lit the oil in the metal lamp on his hip, and their little patch of forest was flooded with light.
Now, he could see the thing more clearly, and he was certainly pleased with what he saw.
Howl [3/?]
A thrill of anticipation ran through him as he eyed it, just thinking of the possibilities.
Vidkun approached the beast cautiously. As the paralysis began to wear off, it struggled against its chains, but even its inhuman strength wasn't enough to break free of their grasp. The chains were pulled taut, giving the creature little room to move within their grasp. Its--his?--body wriggled, his arms and legs extended as far as they could go, but he could go nowhere, and Vidkun grinned as he watched its futile efforts.
After all this time, he'd finally pulled it off.
The monster snarled at him, massive teeth gnashing as it tried in vain to lunge in his direction. Vidkun would have to be careful of that; even without the risk of being seized or slashed by the beast (assuming the chains continued to hold), there was still a risk of being caught in those deadly jaws if he wasn't careful, and that could only end in either brutal death or horrific maiming. He wasn't particularly interested in either.
Vidkun crouched down in front of it, carefully making sure he was nowhere near its head, and leaned down to examine the arrow wound in its leg. A light trickle of blood was running from it, but otherwise, the wound appeared superficial enough that he needn't fear for the creature's life at this point. He reached down to his belt, uncapping a second vial of paralysis potion. He smeared it into the wound, blood running freely as his probing jostled the arrows, and the last thing the creature did before it once again sank into immobility was to give a furious howl of pain.
The wardog muzzle that Vidkun latched into place on its head while it was still didn't quite fit, but it was the best he had. At the very least, he didn't think it would be able to bite or chew through the thing--not before Vidkun was done with the beast, at least--and so it would just have to do.
This time, Vidkun began before the poison wore off, his gaze falling to his prize. He reached down, fingers stroking over the beast's flaccid meat. It didn't yet respond to his touch--couldn't, given the magical paralysis holding the rest of the body. But as the poison wore off and the creature's tell-tale, aggressive growling began to fill the silence of the forest once again, Vidkun could feel it responding to him, finally taking interest in what he was doing to it.
The Nord grinned as he felt it growing in his hand. If it had been large before, it was downright intimidating now; Vidkun eyed it with a sort of bittersweet delight. It was just what he'd hoped for, exactly what he'd been seeking for so long now, but now that he had what he wanted literally right there in his hands, there was a certain disappointment in the realization that this encounter wasn't going to go the way he'd planned when he'd first noticed the wolf was male. There was no way he was going to be able to take that thing inside of him; it was much too large, large enough that there wasn't any chance he'd be able to take it inside of himself, and so that did cut down on the possibilities. Were they all this way, he wondered? Or had he simply stumbled upon a particularly impressive specimen.
It didn't matter, though; not right now. He had his prize in front of him, and he wasn't about to waste any more time worrying about lost potential. This had more than enough to satisfy him for now.
