They are the unbeaten, the men and women who entered the Culling and lived to see the aftermath, lived to see their lives dismantled one piece at a time. Lived to see their freedom stripped from them and their bodies reduced to entertainment for strangers richer and more power than they can even imagine to use at their leisure.

They are the enslaved, a single step above the nonexistent, and they can harbor no sympathy for anyone; to sympathize is to examine, and to self-examine is to die. The reminder of what they've lost is simply too much; their lives revolve around the ideas of "it could be worse" and "it's not that bad," and each and every one of them clings to those mantras in the end.

Sparrow sees it in everyone around her, sees it in the men and women who came before and the ones who come next, and there isn't a thing she can do to stop its progress inside herself.

Sparrow stays, Sparrow stays again, and then Sparrow comes back.

They are all beaten in the end.
