OTP Christmas 2015 | Day #2: Listening to Holiday Music
Title: Listening to Holiday Music
Fandom: Parabellum (original fiction)
Wordcount: 436
Pairing(s): Stelian Frost/Sparrow | Stacey Katharos
Prompt(s): OTP Christmas 2015 2. listening to holiday music
"What the hell am I listening to?"
Frost's grin didn't even falter. There was something almost smug about the way he was looking at her, thought she couldn't imagine why; he certainly wasn't proving anything to her about the supposed charm of the holiday with whatever the hell was assault her ears right now.
"Festive music," he said, as if that explained anything.
"And... why am I listening to it?"
"Because I had the brief and apparently foolish hope that it might instill some Beneficence spirit in you? It's failed, I take it?"
"Yeah, I'm gonna need a lot more than some dead crooner's boring songs to get me excited about this holiday. Also, who listens to this stuff? What are you, a thousand years old?"
"There's nothing wrong with my taste in music. It's not like I'm listening to holiday songs all year-round; it's the holidays, and that's what they're for. They're charming."
Sparrow couldn't help her smirk. "They're charming?" she repeated, shaking her head disbelievingly. "What kind of dork are you?"
"Well, aren't you just full of flattery today? Does it really bother you that much?"
She sighed, exasperated. "It doesn't bother me," she protested. "It's just nuts. You're really into this Beneficence shit, aren't you?"
"I wouldn't say so, no; no more than anyone else, at least. It's just that you're a grinch."
Well, that was one she hadn't heard before. "I'm a what now?"
"A grinch," he repeated. "Someone who doesn't like the holidays or someone who's trying to ruin them for everyone else."
Sparrow rolled her eyes. "Oh, no, you poor baby. Did I ruin your precious holiday?"
"If I say yes, do you plan to make it up to me?"
"I'm gonna say probably not."
"Then, no. You can dislike the music all you want; most of us only learn to enjoy it out of sheer exposure, anyway."
"And heaven knows I'll put up with anything once I've been subjected to it for long enough."
To her surprise--and far from her intentions--her barb seemed to amuse him, and she watched him suppress a smirk. "See? I'll get you in the holiday spirit yet."
"Sure you will, Frost. You just keep blasting terrible music at me, and I'm sure I'll warm right up to it all. Perfectly reasonable."
He just grinned at her, obviously quite convinced in spite of her words. "You'll see."
Sparrow could still remember when she would have found those words ominous. But now, after almost an entire year, she was finding it rather hard to care. Beneficence was by far the least of her problems.
